Manager and Franchise of the Year Announced

The Yawkey League announced the winners of two awards, the Barbara Medieros Manager of the Year and the Franchise of the Year.

Branden Anderson

Branden Anderson of the East Boston Expos is the 2020 Barbara Medieros Manager of the Year. Anderson managed a team consisting of both long time YBL veterans along with a few rookies and guided them to an undefeated regular season. In the postseason, Anderson lead the Expos through two best of five rounds to capture the 2020 YBL championship.

Franchise of the Year
East Boston Expos

The 2020 Franchise of the Year is the East Boston Expos. While the Expos were a new franchise in 2020, the core of the team was formed by players from the East Boston Knights. The Expos would go undefeated during the regular season. They started the playoffs by sweeping the Brighton Black Sox in the semi-finals. The Expos won the 2020 YBL championship by defeating the Charlestown Townies 3-2 in a five game series.

Dorchester Black Barons join YBL

On October 30, the members of the Yawkey League voted to approve the franchise application of the Dorchester Black Barons. The Black Barons franchise will be based out of Boston and begin play in 2021.

The Black Barons are led by franchise holder and manager Aaron Barnes. Barnes comes to the league with many years of coaching experience that includes time with Upper Roxbury Lower Dorchester Little League, South End Baseball, The BASE, RBI Boston and The Dugout. Assisting Aaron Barnes will be Joe Cordero Serrano, Jay Villanueva, Juan Subervi and Bianca Yurnet.

The Black Barons name pays tribute to the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. Choosing a name that honors the Negro leagues was significant to the franchise given this it the 100 year anniversary of the Negro Leagues.

Congratulations to Aaron Barnes and the Black Barons franchise. Welcome to the Yawkey League and good luck in 2021.

Fireman of the Year and Postseason MVP

The common denominator between the next two awards being announced is Scott Hall of the East Boston Expos. In addition to being named the Dick Radatz Fireman of the Year, Hall was also named the David Ortiz Postseason MVP.

During the regular season Scott Hall, led the league with 3 saves. In 4 appearances, Hall only allowed 1 earned run over 9.2 innings.

In the postseason, Hall would start and win three games. Hall pitched 6 innings to win game 3 of the semifinals. In the finals, Hall would start and win Games 1 and 5 both on three days rest. For the playoffs, Hall only gave up 3 earned runs over 20 innings striking out 25.

Congratulations to Scott Hall on a fantastic regular and postseason.

YBL announces three more awards

The YBL is proud to announce the winners of the following three awards.

Tony Conigliaro Comeback Player of the Year
Angelo Colucci

A knee injury limited Angelo Colucci to just nine games in 2019. Colucci came back in 2020 lead the league in RBI and among the league leaders in hits, batting average, and runs.

Steve George Executive of the Year
John Griffith

John Griffith has been a member of the board for five years taking on many administrative related duties. Griffith has put process in place for player waivers and has helped improve the awards voting process. This past season Griffith helped put together the schedule which became a bigger challenge with the uncertainty caused by COVID-19.

Peter Williams Umpire of the Year
Charlie Peterson

With the additional COVID related challenges faced by umpires working games this summer, Charlie Peterson was available all summer to work a large number of Yawkey League games. Whether it be on the bases or behind the plate, Charlie always brought a good energy and level of professionalism.

2020 Silver Slugger Awards

The Yawkey League is proud to announce the winners of its 2020 Gold Glove Awards.

For Matt Costanza, Andrew Mazzone and Kenny Polanco this is their second time winning a Silver Slugger award. In addition to winning a Silver Slugger this season, Ben Adams, Michael Oliveira and Steve Walsh were also awarded Gold Gloves.
