YBL Players of the Week (May23-May29)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Joe Shebertes – Brighton Black Sox – #38

BlackSox

Following a short week and a not-nearly-long-enough-weekend, our second Pitcher of the Week award goes to Joe Shebertes of the Black Sox. While not factoring in the decision, Joe set the table for a big early-season win against one of the more potent offenses in the league. He left the game tied at 1-1 after 5 innings in which he allowed 3 hits, 2 walks and 1 earned run while striking out 7 Rockies batters.

Fantasy Impact: This outing bodes very well for Team ‘Make Way for Doc-Lings’ (mgr: Marc DesRoches), as Shebertes is a viable candidate for best draft pick if he can return to his 2014 form.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Clemente Parra – South End Astros

astros

And our second Player of the Week award goes to YBL rookie Clemente Parra of the Astros. Clemente went 4-for-5 with 4r and 4rbi on the week, including a monster game against the Dodgers where he sent 3 offerings out of the yard at Jim Rice Field.

Fantasy Impact: While not locked into a roster for 2016, Clemente will surely be on the radar of team managers drafting in upcoming years.

YBL Players of the Week (May10-May22)

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Bill Clang – Al Thomas Athletics – #43

Clang

Our first ‘Pitcher’ of the week, Bill Clang was handed the ball both in the ATBC opener against the Braves, and then again in the A’s second game a week later against the McKay Club. Over those 2 starts, Bill put together 9 innings of work allowing only one earned run on six hits, eight Ks and a walk (wins #50&51 of Bill’s YBL career).

Fantasy impact: In addition to the Athletics, this effort also doubles as a strong start for team ‘SPF’ (mgr: Sean Sullivan) in the inaugural YBL fantasy league, netting him a couple quick Ws.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Alex Wong – Revere Rockies – #5

wong POW

And for 2016’s first ‘Player’ of the week, we kick it off with our most recently profiled league member, Alex Wong. After an opening day win on the bump, Albert took Savin Hill pitching deep not once but twice the following afternoon at Revere HS.

Fantasy impact: Team ‘Chicks Dig the Wong-Ball’ (mgr: Mike Maguire) is already filling a cart with chaps and boobie tassels at Party City, as their #1 pick has started off Sriracha with 2 hr, 6 rbi, 5 r, .556 avg, 1.333 slg and 1.879 ops in just 3 games.

Player Profile: Alex Wong (Revere Rockies #5)

wong profile pic

In three years as a member of the Rockies, Alex has become an integral member of the ball club via his ability to provide an offensive spark as well as shut down an opponent on the mound.  A .341 hitter over that time, his 46 RBIs and 22 Stolen Bases would stand to be even better except that he takes every 5th day off at the plate.  And for good reason; his 9 wins and 1.63 ERA in 90 innings over that same time are an equally important part of Revere’s success. Alex has already started off the 2016 campaign with a win on the mound over the Saints in the season opener, promptly followed by a 2-HR game against the Dodgers the following day. Meet Alex, the Bartolo Colon of the Yawkey Baseball League…..

deli

In 2004, Anthony ‘Deli’ Del Prete graduated from Suffolk University and embarked on a baseball career with stints in the Great Lakes Summer League, the CanAm League and the Frontier League, as well as professional stops in Belgium, Cuba and Australia. Nowadays, Deli continues to play the game he loves, pitching for the Somerville Alibrandis of the YBL as well as the Bombers on the MSBL 28+ league. And regardless of what comes up when you google his name, Deli can still be found pitching and coaching at a number of fields, typically surrounded by a pile of empty Mountain Dew bottles and pizza boxes.
